Wonder Boy in Monster Land is a platforming action game with RPG elements, published by Activision in 1989. You play as a hero named Wonder Boy, who must save Monster Land from the evil Dr. Vile and his monster army.
The game begins with an introduction that shows Wonder Boy arriving on a flying surfboard in Monster Land, where he’s told he’s got to defeat Dr. Vile and his monsters. This is all set to the tune of “Mr. Sandman”, one of the earliest songs about dreams, which has been recorded by everyone from The Chordettes to Toni Basil to Carly Rae Jepsen (who was born 40 years after the song was written). The computer then asks you what your name is, and your gender (the game has no way of knowing this unless you tell it).
