This was the first year of the National Basketball Association to feature a virtual reality mode, where you could play as any team with real players. Additionally, the game featured a “Boomshakalaka” meter that increased how dominant plays would be when you did something good, such as make an assist, score a 3-pointer, or make a dunk. If you managed to fill up the meter, you could do a “Boomshakalaka”, which was an exciting way to win games.
NBA Live also had three-point contests and slam dunk contests. The graphics were fairly realistic for its time, but not as realistic as today’s games. It also had commentary from Brent Musburger and James Brown. The 3DO port included the Slam Dunk Contest from NBA Jam: Tournament Edition but didn’t have the Boomshakalaka meter or any of the other features that were unique to NBA Live 96. It only had 2 on 2 basketball instead of 3 on 3 basketball (like regular NBA Live). However, it did include an exclusive soundtrack of hip hop music
NBA Live 96, one of the latest games in the NBA Live series, was released on DOS and Genesis in 1996. At the time, this video game was available through Electronic Arts’ Hitmen Productions. EA has continued to produce many high-quality sports games since then, including the Madden NFL series and the FIFA series.
