Lockdown: 2025
Most people have heard of “lockdown” as a security measure for keeping people safe from intruders, but the term also applies to keeping an entire place safe from a threat. In this movie, when a highly contagious virus puts the entire country on lockdown, enforced by martial law, one family learns they’re not safe in their own home.
In The Crazies, a small town in Pennsylvania is suddenly hit with a virus that causes its victims to go completely insane and violent. As chaos erupts everywhere and people start killing each other, the military moves in to quarantine everyone who was exposed and keep them from spreading the disease any further. As the story goes on, it becomes clear that those who are infected aren’t necessarily aware of it—they don’t know why they’re behaving so violently—and many innocent people are being killed prematurely simply because they might be infected. The military doesn’t care about these innocent people, though; as far as they’re concerned, extreme measures need to be taken to prevent more harm from coming to those able to defend themselves.
In this movie, a highly contagious virus takes its toll on the world’s population. The government places the country under martial law to help contain the spread and enforce quarantine rules. However, it turns out that the infection can be spread through the air, leaving no place for people to feel safe—even inside their own homes.
Stephen King’s novel-turned-film focuses on typical family Joe, who is trying to keep his wife and children safe from the threat of infection and the military alike. After Joe’s father-in-law falls ill, he becomes concerned about those in his house who may potentially carry the virus. When his wife, Alice, begins experiencing flu-like symptoms, he is forced to confront his fears of isolation and quarantine. The film’s tagline appropriately describes what this family goes through: “Trust no one.”
