The last thing I wanted to do after spending hours in front of a computer was play another computer game, but Farmcraft won me over with its quirky aesthetics and adorable characters. The premise is simple: you are Ginger, a small-town farmer who has been given the boot from her family farm by the AgroCorporation, a massive conglomerate that dominates all the local farms. You have one year to turn the former family farm around and save it from being sold off to developers.
Farmcraft’s developers describe it as a “farming RPG,” with elements of simulation games like Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley. It’s got some great humor, like when you run into your ex-boyfriend after he got fired from his job at the AgroCorporation for not selling enough crops. The multi-leveled art styles of different areas in the game are also fun—you can tell that you’ve arrived at a new location because the graphics will change from detailed pixel art to something more stylized. The game revolves around the titular Ginger and her attempts to fight the oppressive AgroCorporation. The corporation has been going around buying out small farms and replacing them with factory farms that produce mass-produced meat products. It’s up to Ginger to travel around the world, raise money for her cause, and convince people to join her in order to defeat AgroCorporation.
