Adventure Island is a 1986 action game that’s now considered abandonware. The arcade, platform and oceania themes are what make this game stand out.
Hudson Soft Company, Ltd. released Adventure Island on MSX in 1986, and it’s easy to see why—this game is a blast. It has a colorful, fun art style that’s easy on the eyes. You play as Master Higgins, who sets out on an adventure to rescue his love Yum-Yum from the clutches of the evil witch doctor KAOS.
On your way, you’ll come across plenty of obstacles and enemies in your quest to reach the final boss. The controls are tight and responsive as you run and jump over pits, fight against enemies wielding everything from spears to yo-yos, and collect apples and hearts for health.
Tips:
-Always make sure to have plenty of apples with you—not only can they restore your health if you take damage from most enemies, but they’ll also give you bonus points.
-Equip yourself with a yo-yo for more offensive capabilities—you can throw it at enemies or use it to swing across gaps in platforms.
-Go back through levels again if you want to explore them thoroughly or collect every apple in them (they’re usually hidden in hard-to-reach places).
It was one of the first games I ever played. I remember my older sister playing this game on the MSX computer at the time and I definitely thought it was a strange game because she had to use a controller to walk around instead of using a keyboard. The graphics were pretty advanced for its time and the levels were very cute.
This game is set in an ocean theme with some arcade and platform elements. You play as Master Higgins who has to find his girlfriend Tina who is kidnapped by the evil Doctor, Willy. There are eight different levels and you have to defeat all the enemies in each level before you can advance to another one. This game has been abandonware since 2006 and can be played on many platforms such as Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
