If you were ever a paperboy when you were young, you’ll know how ungrateful your customers can be. You’ve got to deliver your newspapers in the morning before school, and they make all kinds of excuses for why they’re not ready to accept their delivery.
The original game was like this, with some excellent graphics and an annoying soundtrack, but it was still fun. The PC conversion is almost as good as the original arcade game, with a little bit nicer graphics and the same hectic gameplay. You’ve got to deliver your papers before 6:00am and one of the worst parts is that the customer might not even be awake to bother thanking you for bringing them their paper. PAPERBOY, an arcade game released in 1984 by Atari Games, was a great example of what made the early 80’s video game experience so special. Made up of bright colors and simple gameplay that repeats over and over, it is a classic example of what defined an arcade game at the time.
It would have been easy for Electronic Arts to simply port this game over to the PC and call it good; luckily they didn’t do that. Instead they took their time and did some minor tweaking here and there to make the game more user friendly with a point-and-click mouse interface and even added some new modes of play. This strategy worked pretty well as I played through all three modes on my first try without even looking at any instructions or hints about what I had to do or where I had to go. I do have some complaints about this version of PAPERBOY; it is missing a few things from the original arcade version but overall its
