Published in 1984 by Scarborough Systems, Inc., MasterType was an above-average typing title in its time, with a series of increasingly difficult typing games that were playable on the Apple II and the Commodore 64. It also had a version available for the Atari 8-bit computer line and the Texas Instruments TI-99/4A systems.

The goal of the game is simple: type correctly and quickly for as many words as possible in each round. As with most games of its genre, your performance is measured by accuracy, speed, and endurance. Accuracy measures how well you typed the word and is based on the distance from where your cursor was when you typed the word to where the cursor was supposed to be after you finished typing. Speed measures how quickly you typed the word, with the number of words typed per minute being calculated by dividing the total number of words completed during the round by total time taken to complete them.

Endurance measures how many words are completed before you make a mistake and is based on how many words have been completed during a round versus how many were required or allowed. If you type every letter correctly but take a long time to do so, your points will be low because accuracy is more important than speed; if you type quickly but make lots of mistakes, your score will also be low. MasterType can be played solo against a computer opponent (which offers only limited challenge)
