Emi Records, Ed Hunter is still a popular zombies title amongst retrogamers, with its freeware download version being a favourite of the last decade. The game was developed in 1998 by Housemarque, who are currently well-known for several other titles, including Super Stardust and Dead Nation. In Ed Hunter you’re fighting evil zombies in a futuristic world where you can listen to music as you wipe out the undead scourge.

If you haven’t played Ed Hunter, or if this is the first you’re hearing of it, here’s the rundown: Ed Hunter is a first-person shooter where you play as a character called “Ed.” Yes, that’s right, your character is named after a human in the story. As Ed, you’re equipped with a variety of weapons, including guns and knives, and you have to shoot your way through hordes of undead.

Ed Hunter was developed by British developer Grin and published by EMI Records. It was released on March 9th 1999 and has not been released again since. There are no new copies of the game available anywhere (at least as far as I know). You can still download Ed Hunter from various abandonware sites or download it on Steam. Ed Hunter also has a source port made for it called Qfusion.

Ed Hunter was not very well received; it has an average critic score of 49/100 on Metacritic. One critic from GameSpot wrote that “Ed Hunter is so bad I have heard rumors that it was actually developed by aliens in order to lure humans into buying it.”
