Forbidden Knowledge: Legends of Atlantis Exposed
The search for Atlantis is gaining momentum. With new evidence for a lost city, some researchers claim they know where the long lost kingdom once was. The legend of Atlantis has been told and retold throughout history, with Plato’s account being one of the most famous. And while there are many who believe in the existence of the lost city, others are skeptical. However, a new book by author Charles Orser provides a fresh perspective on Atlantis: he believes it was actually located in North America.
In his book “Forbidden Knowledge: Legends of Atlantis Exposed” (Oxford University Press), Orser works to show that Plato’s story is not just a myth but rather a real account of an actual civilization. His research draws from Native American creation stories and oral tradition as well as from archaeological and historical evidence, including comparisons between Egyptian hieroglyphics and Mayan writing. Ultimately, he believes that Atlantis was in fact located in present-day Western New York State—a theory supported by recent discoveries about ancient aquatic life.
Orser’s book follows the journey of underwater archaeologist Dr. Joseph Genier, who believes he has found evidence of ancient ruins off the coast of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Genier

The legend of Atlantis goes back to Plato, who wrote about it in two of his dialogues, Timaeus and Critias. In these works, Plato describes Atlantis as a mighty empire that conquered parts of Europe, Africa and Asia before it was ultimately defeated by the Athenians (though some translations say the Egyptians) in a war that sank the island into the ocean. The story was further developed by other writers, such as Pliny the Elder and Cleitarchus.
