Tor Browser is a free privacy browser for Windows that protects users from online surveillance and tracking. Short for ‘The Onion Router’, Tor was developed as a project to protect US intelligence agents from foreign surveillance during their online activities. Tor provides anonymity by encrypting your internet traffic and bouncing it through multiple servers around the world. This way, the recipient of your connection can only see the last IP address it visited before reaching them—not your actual internet protocol (IP) address.

Tor Browser is based on the Firefox web browser, with many privacy-enhancing add-ons. These include blocking any website elements that may be used to identify or track users, such as JavaScript and Flash, preventing websites from saving cookies to your computer, and blocking any website element that might be used to reveal your location. Tor also has a unique feature known as ‘Onion Sites’, which allows users to browse the Dark Web using a normal browser without needing special software.

The standard version can be installed on your computer just like any other program, but if you have limited disk space or want to take your browser files with you on a thumb drive, portable browsers are ideal.
