The AutoClose program is a small, free-to-use, stand-alone application that enables you to close running programs and shut down your computer automatically at a scheduled time. It’s flexible enough that it can be used in multiple situations, whether you want to ensure that all your running programs are closed before you go to bed or you need to have a specific program close and shut down at a specific time every day at work.

In order for the program to function properly, you’ll need to set it up by adding the programs that you want it to manage and define when they should close. There are additional settings related to how the program will warn users about what’s happening and what should happen afterwards (shutdown or hibernate), but those are optional. The default is safe—users will be warned well in advance of an impending shutdown and given the choice between cancelling or allowing the action. If you would like those options disabled, though, there’s an option for that as well.

You can download AutoClose from the following link: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/autoclose/AutoClose%20Setup.exe

The first time you need to shut down your computer at night before bed and the last thing you want to do is spend another 30 minutes searching for programs that are still running and painfully clicking through prompts, you’ll understand what AutoClose is for.

AutoClose is a free Mac app that can schedule custom shutdown or close-program-and-shutdown commands for any number of programs, at any time of day or night. It’s simple and effective—all you have to do is run the program and pick which programs to close, along with when you want them closed and whether you want your computer to automatically shut down afterwards. You can even select specific instances of programs if they’re open more than once. When the time comes, it displays a little dialog box with checkboxes next to each program you selected; just click the appropriate boxes in order and then click “OK”. No more hassle with asking the same questions over and over again: “Are you sure?”, “It’s OK if it takes a few minutes”, “Can I just close it from Activity Monitor?”, etc.
